KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – The ‘Raider’ Brigade mourns the loss of one of our own, who was killed Monday, 30 Aug. near the Arghandab river valley outside Kandahar City, Afghanistan while on a combat logistics patrol.

Staff Sgt. Kevin James Kessler, a 32-year-old native of Canton, Ohio was assigned to Forward Support Company, 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Kessler was known throughout the unit as a ‘PT stud’ and often talked about  his outdoor exploits with his wife, Adrian. His Soldiers knew him as an extremely motivated NCO who would always tackle a mission head-on, no matter how difficult it mgiht be.

“I always looked foward to PT in the morning with Staff Sgt. Kessler beacuse I knew it would be tough to keep up,” said 2nd Lt Guy Stark, FSC platoon leader. “He was an outstanding NCO and an even more outstanding individual who always took care of his Soldiers and Family.”

Kessler enlisted in the Army as a Motor Transport Operator in June, 2004. He attended Basic Training at Fort Sill, Okla., then Advanced Individual Training at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon completion of his training he reported to Fort Stewart, Ga. where he was assigned to 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment. He deployed to Iraq with the unit in January, 2007.

In November, 2009, Kessler was reassigned to FSC, 1-66 at Fort Carson Colo. to serve as a squad leader and later, a section sergeant.

My first impression of Kevin was a lasting on that stuck with me for the duration of our friendship,, said Sgt. 1st Class Sean Patterson, FSC platoon sergeant. He always pushed himself and his Soldiers to do their very best at everything.

“He would often show me pictures of himself and Adrian on top of some huge mountain, standing in the snow,” said Patterson. “I envied his constant strive for happiness with his outdoor adventures.”

Kevin was a loving husband and talked often of Adrian and his excitement at becoming a new father, said Patterson. He will truly be missed.
